Public links: an overview
A public link is how you show a project to someone without an account: a client, a site manager, an installation crew. It opens as an ordinary web page, and nothing there can be edited.
How a link differs from a file
Export hands over a file: it leaves for good and lives its own life. A link hands over access: it shows what is in the database right now, it can be reconfigured after you sent it and closed at any moment.
| An export file | A link | |
|---|---|---|
| What leaves | A copy as of the export | Access to the current data |
| After sending | Cannot be changed | Can be reconfigured and revoked |
| The recipient needs | Nothing | A browser |
Two kinds of link
| Kind | What it is |
|---|---|
| Automatic | Every saved project has one. View only, nothing can be downloaded, and it cannot be deleted either. It does not count against your limit. |
| Your own | You create it and configure the access. You can make several — different ones for the client and for the crew, say. |
The automatic link is found in your account, in the project panel itself — see "Projects". It is not in the general link list: you did not create it.
The two-gates rule
A format is available to the recipient only if it is allowed both by the link settings and by your own access. Link settings can only narrow what is already available to you, never widen it. That is why an empty format list means "nothing can be downloaded", not "everything can".
